Bandera – History & Attractions

Beautiful natural landscapes, fascinating museums, and the Western culture of the “Cowboy Capital of the world” are just a few of the many attractions you can find in Bandera.

History

Built on the banks of Medina River, Bandera was built in 1853, known today as the ‘Cowboy Capital of the World’. Located in the picturesque Hill Country in Central Texas’s heart, Bandera was named after a pass (Bandera – Red Flags in Spanish) marking the unofficial boundary between Indian and Spanish Lands.

The self-proclaimed “Cowboy Capital of the World” serves as a hub where dude ranches abound, rodeos reign, and cowboys mosey through town. In recent years, efforts have been made to preserve the historical treasures of Bandera, such as historical plaques, statues, and monuments around the town to honor the cowboys, pioneers, and prominent folks who made Bandera into what it is today.

As one might expect, Bandera loves to share its Texas heritage and celebrates the American Cowboy’s National Day with pride and in a big way. People of Bandera celebrate it with music, barbeque, and rodeos – can it get any better than that? We beg to differ. The fun takes place on the fourth Saturday of every July, be sure to check out the festivities.
